Four things move your bill

The model that served it

A Klein render is 8 credits per megapixel; a flagship Gemini render is 225. Routes always pick the cheapest model that hits the outcome you asked for.

How large the image is

Most models bill per megapixel, so a 16:9 hero costs more than a square thumbnail. Some bill a flat rate per image, and the Gemini flash models step through resolution tiers.

Whether it had to generate

Only the first request for a URL spends credits. Every request after it is free, however many times it is served.

Nothing else

No seats, no egress, no storage line item. A generation that works out below one credit costs nothing at all.

Questions developers actually ask

What exactly is a cache hit?Any request whose cache key has been generated before on your host. It is served from the edge, from R2, or as a 304, costs nothing, and never touches a provider. The key is the prompt, route or model, aspect ratio, seed, reference image and preset — not the whole URL, so adding a tracking parameter does not regenerate anything.
What happens when I run out of credits?By default new generations pause and return a placeholder image with an IGPT-Error header. Every already-cached URL keeps serving, so your pages do not break. Switch overages on in billing and generation continues, metered per 1,000 extra credits at your plan's rate.
Do unused credits roll over?No. Included credits reset with each billing period. If you consistently run out, the next plan up is cheaper than paying overage.
Do I need a card to start?Yes. The 7-day free trial runs through Stripe Checkout, so your card is saved — but it is not charged until the trial ends, and you can cancel any time before then. The trial includes 500 credits and every feature.
Can I cap what I spend?Yes, as a hard stop rather than a dollar figure: overages are off by default, so generation pauses the moment you reach your plan's included credits. Cached delivery is unaffected. Each project also carries a per-client credit limit — 1,000 credits per IP per hour out of the box.
Can I change plan myself?Not yet. A metered subscription needs its base price and its usage price changed together, so plan changes go through us — write to support@stablemodels.ai and we handle the switch and the usage already recorded. Cancelling is self-service through Stripe, and access runs to the end of the period you paid for.
Who owns the images?You do, subject to the originating model provider terms. We store bytes only to serve your cache.
