Black Forest Labs built the Flux model family after key members split from Stability AI. Within this family, Flux 1 Schnell and Flux 2 Pro represent opposite ends of the quality-cost spectrum. Schnell (German for "fast") launched in 2024 as the entry-level speed option. Flux 2 Pro arrived in January 2025 as the flagship model—Black Forest Labs' answer to the question "how good can Flux get?"
The numbers tell a stark story: Schnell generates images in about 1 second. Flux 2 Pro takes around 6 seconds and costs roughly 9x more—a significant price increase. That gap isn't arbitrary. Pro uses significantly more compute per image, processing through additional refinement stages that Schnell skips entirely.
The ELO score difference (1050 vs 1170) reflects roughly 120 points of measured quality improvement. In practical terms, Flux 2 Pro consistently produces sharper details, more accurate prompt interpretation, and better handling of complex scenes. It's the model professional studios choose when quality can't be compromised.
Both models have their place. The question isn't which is "better"—it's which makes sense for your specific use case, budget, and quality requirements.
Note: Flux 2 Pro supports image-to-image generation, allowing you to iterate on existing images. Flux 1 Schnell is text-to-image only. This feature alone can justify the upgrade for certain workflows.
